About the Club...

There appears to be some conjecture about the beginning of Broome racing,  but the centenary of the Broome Cup was celebrated in 1994, indicating that the first Broome Cup was run in 1894. However there is evidence of some racing prior to that date.

The first track was established close to the main town site adjacent to the airport. Some fifty years on a new track was carved out of the scrub at picturesque Gantheaume Point, within a stone throw of the beautiful Cable Beach. This is an excellent location, almost surrounded by the Indian Ocean, it benefits from constant coll breezes which are most welcome in the hot and humid climate of the Kimberley. The beach is a major attraction for trainers and horses relocating from southern areas for the Pearl Coast racing season. Club committees have strongly resisted numerous attempts to have the land resumed for other major tourism development and will continue to do so.

The club has enjoyed tremendous community support during its development over the past century. With the recent growth of tourism in the area, like the town itself, it has experienced unprecedented expansion and is now arguably the most progressive race cub in Australia, whilst still retaining a country picnic atmosphere.

Broome race meetings are an experience unlike most others. The horse racing, whilst very competitive and professional,  is almost secondary to the social and community aspect of the day. With Broome now a major tourist destination race meetings are a mixture of people from all over the world rubbing shoulders with the multicultural local community. In the balmy tropical climate the post race party extends well into the evening and patrons are reluctant to go home.
